Wax, The Dreadlock Killer

I am not here to tell you what to or what not to do with your hair, that is ultimately your decision. I am however, here to share with you my knowledge, in hopes to persuade you to avoid dreadlock-threatening actions.

I’ve brought up the fact that the forming of dreadlocks takes TIME and PATIENCE in countless posts before, and today we’re going to touch on what happens when you cheat and try to speed up the dreadlock process.

Many people see products from companies such as Dreadheadhq or KnottyBoy and get excited that they’ll be able to have dreadlocks right away. Anyone who wants cosmetically perfect, cylindrical dreadlocks at a fast rate need to understand the facts, first. All it takes is a simple purchase of some wax product, right?! WRONG!!!

First, I would like to say that, in my opinion, if you’re looking to have dreadlocks with no frizzy hair, no loops, bumps or character- you must not understand the beauty of dreadlocks. Dreadlocks are not meant to be perfect.

When using wax to start your dreadlocks, you are not benefiting your hair at all. Dreadlocks are formed by hair knotting and building up on itself. When wax is put into hair to help “dread” it, what is happening is you are coating your hair with a horrible gunk that is usually super tacky. Wax gets all over your clothes, pillowcases, skin etc. and it isn’t easy to get rid of. Wax makes your hair stick together, but does NOT allow the hair to knot properly. Wax can give off the illusion that you have nice, mature dreadlocks but sadly the illusion only exists because the wax sets into the hair and hardens.

You don’t have to put a huge amount of wax into your hair to ruin it, either. Even the smallest amount is bad for your dreads. What happens after you use the wax to create “pretty” dreadlocks is the wax locks into the center of your dreadlocks. The sticky gunk picks up dust, lint and other unwanted garbage that is almost impossible to remove from your hair. Imagine what you could be carrying on your head! According to dreadlockssite.com, there are endless numbers of people testifying against wax, and sharing their horror stories. One user used wax ONE time to begin his dreads. After using tips to remove the wax for close to four weeks, he ultimately decided to shave his head because nothing seemed to work.

Below are pictures of wax trapped in dreadlocks.

Buying such harmful products from these companies is not doing anything other than throwing your money away. If you’re looking to start or even maintain your dreadlocks with wax, I HOPE TO GOD to take a second to think over the risk!

Come back next week for more From the Desk of a Dreadhead
